A BRIEF HISTORY OF STENBURY PARK

Our interest in the Welsh Breed started with the purchase of the Section B Gelding Eelah Windfall (Coed Coch Branas Imp x Rawthey Wishing Well Imp) in 1984. Windfall was shown successfully and was twice Champion Gelding at the NSW All Welsh Show in the early 90's.

We registered our prefix "Stenbury Park" in 1993 when we acquired the Imported Welsh Mountain Pony Mare "Weston Rainbow" who was one of original foundation mares sent to Australia for the Weston Stud when it was re-located to Australia many years ago. At this time we also had a lovely 14.2hh Thoroughbred Mare "Burren-Dah Ebony" who had previously been shown successfully including Champion Novice Galloway at the 1987 Royal Canberra Show and also winning her Open Galloway class in the same year. As we were more interested in the Open/Saddle side of showing at this time, both mares were served by the Riding Pony Stallion Janinos Little Joker (Imp).

Rainbow produced the 12.2hh Stenbury Park Mirror Image who went on to win many Champions, he was the winner of the Childrens Riding Pony of The Year at the NSW Riding Pony Pageant in 1998 and was also a  winner at Canberra Royal. and placed in his Novice Pony Hack Class at Sydney Royal.

Ebony produced the 14.2hh Stenbury Park Playboy who was later sold to Kate Treneman of Rossmare NSW. Playboy had a very successful show ring career and was a Horse of the Year & Royal Show Champion including Reserve Champion Galloway at Brisbane Royal in 2000 and Best Novice Galloway at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in 1998 and also winning his Open Galloway class in the same year. Sadly, Ebony passed away in 1998 whilst in foal to the Riding Pony Stallion Kirreway Trident so her worth as a broodmare was never known. Weston Rainbow, now 32 is still doing well.

In 1994, Weston Rainbow was again served by Janinos Little Joker. This mating produced Stenbury Park Petite Bow who only grew to be 11.2hnds. Petite Bow was a winner at Canberra Royal.

In 1996 we decided in a change of direction and decided to breed Welsh Mountain Ponies, as they were after all, our first interest. The search for a suitable Stallion began and as we had always admired Owendale Bart,  we contacted James Parlevliet & Daryl Bishop of the Osory Stud. The foal we brought home was "Osory Destiny". Little did we know that the frightened baby on our float would become the superstar he did amassing Champion after Champion & Supreme after Supreme. He was a winner of his class and Reserve Champion WM Stallion or Colt at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in 1997 & 1998, Champion in 1999, he again won his class at his last Sydney Royal in 2004 only to be beaten by his Son Angel Park Merlin for Champion. Destiny was Supreme Champion Welsh Mountain Pony at the 2000 NSW All Welsh Show. The list of his major wins is far to extensive to list.

In 1997, the Section A Mare "Owendale Eve" (Werncochlyn Pegasus (Imp) x Sunwillow Evolene (Imp) came to Stenbury Park and was served with Destiny. This produced Stenbury Park Siaradus. Siaradus was shown successfully and has been a winner at All Welsh, National & Royal Show level on numerous occasions.  Siaradus was Eve's only foal produced for us.

In 2002, Angel Park Merlin was born and after weaning, came to live at Stenbury Park. As we only have 5 acres, In 2005, we made the heart wrenching decision to sell Osory Destiny. Rebecca Moxham of Fosters Valley Stud at Binnaway in NSW contacted us and he was on his way to his new home and is now living happily with his many wives.

Another notable mention would be Stenbury Park Ashbrook - Born 2000 (Janinos Little Joker Imp x Rhyl Diadem). Ashbrook was only shown lightly as a baby and was Best PartWelsh Youngstock at the NSW ALL Welsh Show as a 2yo. He was sold to the USA as a 4 year old.

2008 will see a new chapter arrive at Stenbury Park in the Section A Colt "Llangollen Top Notch" purchased from Robert, Alison & Megan Wansbrough in Tasmania. Bred in the purple, we hope that, along with Angel Park Merlin, he will compliment our future broodmares.
